For the NOI Techpark in Bolzano – South Tyrol’s hub for technological innovation – Poliflor designed and installed vertical gardens covering a total area of approximately 620 m², distributed across outdoor terraces with different exposures (N/S/E/W). The variety of orientations called for a dedicated botanical study for each wall, tailoring the species selection to the actual sunlight and microclimate conditions.

System used
The system adopted is Flexiverde®, Poliflor’s patented technology based on continuous modules with integrated pockets. The growing medium, made of Vydro® technical stone wool treated with the Bioaktive process, ensures optimal water retention and long-term dimensional stability, with a planting density of approximately 40 plants per square metre.

Plant composition
The planting scheme combines herbaceous perennials and shrubs, selected to ensure visual continuity throughout the seasons and to adapt to the climate of the Bolzano basin, which is marked by extreme temperature ranges: hot, muggy summers on the one hand, and cold, windy winters on the other.
From a technical standpoint, however, the most significant element is the introduction – for the first time in a Poliflor installation – of trees over 2 metres tall, including Carpinus betulus, Betula alba, Acer palmatum and Davidia involucrata, specifically pre-grown for integration into a green wall. This achievement considerably expands the compositional limits of vertical garden systems, bringing the density and visual layering of a wall-based project closer to that of a ground-level landscape.
